Hi everyone :)
(Sorry long post ahead LOL, also my English tend to be broken at times as I am not a native speaker, please excuse anything that looked like butchered language skills :) )
I just joined so I am hoping this thread is in the right place, I have about billions of questions LOL, so I am hoping I can solve some of my confusion with your much appreciated help.
Like I said in my opening post, a few days ago my ISP sent me my first cease and desist letter, which really did scare the crap out of me (Utorrent was open for maybe 5 hours in the last week as appose to being open almost 24/7) I read about many downloaders which simply ignored the letter but to be honest the letter had me a little freaked out - I dont want to lose my internet connection.
I understand that the only way to avoid getting one of those letters is to stop downloading all together I just dont want to :)
So as i was surfing the net looking for ways to solve the privacy issue (i tried BTGuard which doesnt work :( ) I ran into a post suggesting that perhaps the best way is to get myself a my own seedbox.
I have to admit I like the idea of a seedbox a lot, not just because I am downloading my things into a computer which is not mine, also because I really do enjoy seeding back (I just got into private trackers in the last month but I have a good ratio on all of them, over 4.0 on most)
So I guess I have a few questions,
1. Are seedboxs really as safe as they sound?
2. Are they friendly to newbies? (I am pretty good at learning new things and applications but I dont have any linux experience so I dont think I will be able to work from a command prompt)
3. How long does it usually take to download a file from the seedbox to my computer once I finished downloading it (I mostly download TV-shows but prefer the HD releases so about 1-1.5 GB a file? ( I just run a speed test and the average results seems to be somewhere around 20 Mb(download) / 5 MB (upload)
I really would appreciate any kind of help I can get on the topic.
Thanks
K

Hi,
it's the right section but it's a lot of reading indeed, lol
I'll try to answer your questions one by one but don't hesitate to ask for a clarification if you find some of my text too ambiguous (english is not my first language too, lol)
1. Are seedboxs really as safe as they sound?
nothing is fully safe and we can always track your steps but seedboxes are quite one of the best solutions you can take.
Actually, having a seedbox will give to your sharing activities their own ip different from your surfing activities. and if you mix it with a good vpn and some tweeks (private server, dns...) you will be just good to royally mislead your isp.
however, you should always verify that your box's ip range is not banned from the private trackers you want to use it for.
2. Are they friendly to newbies? (I am pretty good at learning new things and applications but I dont have any linux experience so I dont think I will be able to work from a command prompt)
It depends on the seedbox you have, the webui used...although, it's quite easy to setup actually and even if you haven't any experience with the linux shell, don't worry you will find it easier and more logical than you may think :smile1:
let me know if you're looking for a specific seedbox setup tutorial or If you have a related linux question and I'll be pleased to help out as much as possible,
3. How long does it usually take to download a file from the seedbox to my computer once I finished downloading it (I mostly download TV-shows but prefer the HD releases so about 1-1.5 GB a file? ( I just run a speed test and the average results seems to be somewhere around 20 Mb(download) / 5 MB (upload)
there are actually a lot of different offers with different speeds. It usually depends on your budget and you may find 100 Mbps servers as long as Gbps...
we have the chance to have here one the best seedbox offers around and I suggest you take a look at this thread (here (http://www.filehoard.com/showthread.php?t=1581))to have an idea about the specifications and the prices.
And if you're interested, let me know and I'll contact him for you so he can advice you the best solution for you,
cheers,

Hi Again :)
Thank you for the quick reply! you have helped a lot!
And of course... answers leads to more questions LOL
1. How do I verify the IP range is not banned, I am pretty new to private servers as well, I have accounts with tvtorrent (which is where I download most of shows from) and TheBox and torrentzone (for backup)
2. my budget is limited (about 20-25 USD a month) so most of the plans on the thread you linked are a little too expensive (though one of them might work) I tried to click the link to take a look at the website but it seems to be down?
3. Am I allowed to show plans I found interesting here and get an opinion on them?
Once again thank you so much for the help.

you are very welcome :smile1:
1. these informations are usually specified in the faq/rules of the tracker and you should see a regularly list of banned countries when it's the case.
2. I might look for other offers or ask him directly as he offers quite an excellent service/following and you should have no worries when to do your setup.
3. Of course, feel free to ask any question, we are here for that :smile1:

it's a pleasure mate ! :smile1:
agree with you, this offer is quite interesting but you should note that It's a shared server,
however, this will not affect your service/speed in any way , so it doesn't concretely change nothing but I had to specify it,
anyway, bhachuj will give you far more specific details about possible obstacles/drawbacks (ex : shared ip),
by what I've read and saw, his servers are very reliable/stable in comparison with the concurrence but the best part of it is definitely the constant support offered, so you should have no problem installing It or simply asking for something.
as you have noticed, these seedboxes offer all the accesses (utorrent, ftp, vnc, firefox) you'll need to do your setup and use your seedbox.
This process with bhachuj's help should take no time, he will certainly give you all the related technical aspects but you can still ask for any question you want and I'll be pleased to answer :smile1:

Thanks Again for all your answers, you did an amazing job of giving awesome information and calming me down.
Does the offer to connect me with the guy still stand? I think I might be ready to get my first seedbox :)
Thanks
