What is region code?
A region code is a setting on a DVD-Video disc. There are 9 regions and region 0 means you can play this in any dvd player. Region free dvd players ignore the region setting on a DVD-Video disc.
What is NTSC
NTSC is the United States television settings. It is build up by 29.97 interlaced frames of video per second. Each frame consists of 486 lines out of a total of 525 (the rest are used for sync, vertical retrace, and other data such as captioning). The NTSC refresh frequency was originally exactly 60 Hz in the black and white system, chosen because it matched the nominal 60 Hz frequency of alternating current power used in the United States.
What is PAL?
The PAL colour system is usually used with a video format that has 625 lines per frame (576 visible lines, the rest being used for other information such as sync data and captioning) and a refresh rate of 50 interlaced fields per second (or 25 full frames per second)
Why won't USA NTSC Dvd players not play PAL?
Most common USA DVD players do not have an on-the-fly conversion method built in.
But why can European DVD players play NTSC?
Beause most common Europe DVD players actually do have this method built in.
Why does conversion from PAL to NTSC usually suck?
The 29.97 interlaced frames containing 525 lines has to be converted to 50 interlaced frames containing 625 lines. So they have to come up with a method to "add" 20.3 interlaced frames and 100 lines.
Why is NTSC to PAL possible then?
Because it's easier to truncate data than magically add data.
What if i wanna play PAL DVD-Videos in The United States?
Get a region free DVD player with built in PAL->NTSC conversion. Make sure the dvd player can handle 100Volt/60Hz.
Is PAL better than NTSC?
It actually is, but not by much. It is a bit sharper in quality. But it costs a lot of money to film in PAL in the United States, while it is more affordable in Europe
