RAR vs .avi

I prefer RAR's because thats all u use in the warez communities (sites that use rapidshare, megaupload, etc.) and Winrar is a really good compressor so altogether it just helps me to put all my files into 1 rar file and then password it or w/e i want

Ya but with applications you have to include instructions, cracks, keygens, setup, etc.

I prefer AVI, because with RAR's you waste your time unraring and hard drive when seeding. I don't really understand why files are RARed, with newer BitTorrent clients you can force recheck to make sure your files are not corrupted.

Agree - AVI is better because it is easier in every aspect

Compressed files have no place in BitTorrent, they are completely useless. Great for FTP & Usenet sure, but utterly pointless on BT and I try to avoid every site that has them.

It doesn't matter to me. But I do prefer downloading all the rar parts (most likely untouched).. If you are downloading an avi it's touched and maybe injected with some bad stuff..?

Even i prefer dl AVI file than rar. There are some morons who upload only half or incomplete rar files and it in turn affect my band with limitation. Hence AVI

winrar is actually very easy to work, I hardly ever open the software itself.

here is how I work it :)

1. I go to the file folder (where the files downloaded)
2. double click on any of the rar files.
3. winrar window will open, just double click again on the file inside, it will open the movie in your default folder.

Another option if you want it to extract the files to the folder is to simply right click on any of the rar files and select extract here, the movie file will appear in the same folder :)

winRAR is a magical tool, but I much prefer using .avi for movies and anything that is media, but programs are just perfect for .rar

It's just too easy to screw up media if there are 30 files to usher around, whereas a program just needs to be unrared and is fine in its little folder. Like lebron said, rar files usually end up taking 2x HDD space.
Thx FireintheBedroom, I'll check out virtual dub since the two part discs are extremely annoying.

rar would be an option for me if i could download one or two parts and then play them. i really don't want 2-4gb of porn at once.
